The Reproductive Health Bill: A Reaction by Miguel Mercado

The Reproductive Health Bill is a conjecture published by our incumbent president Benigno Aquino III. It focuses on the use of contraceptives for the use of family planning. So, with the seemingly positive premise I have given, why is it that the church is against this controversial Bill?

What makes the bill so controversial is because of the church’s ill-acceptance toward the decision created by the Head of State. For them, it is against Catholic Morals in the usage of such mechanisms. As a catholic Noynoy was threatened excommunication and civil disobedience if he were to instigate the Bill as it is the duty of the church to uphold their own morals to keep in mind the people. The church cannot see that a good cannot always be created from a good, but the most efficient and most productive decision to retrieve good results is the best way. An example of this is abortion which an evil that may, most certainly, come as a bi-product of not releasing this bill, but if we were to handle this with a less painful decision, but not to the extent of desecration, then we can avoid atrocities such as abortion. From this I can say that some of the morals the church can give can somehow be too idealistic.

To make a decision against the church is an act of mutiny in my part, but my belief stays firm that they should half-way. This is my belief as both a catholic and a Filipino citizen who aspires for population equilibrium. Family planning is an important factor in the lives of married couples, and it is important for them to plan, but for the uneducated who could not decide for themselves a plan for life, then the government ought to help the uneducated citizens as it is their role to help, and the most effective way to govern the people to have a plan for their family is through the use – but not always – of contraceptives as it will effectively reduce the population growth and may effectively decrease other more sever causes of inhuman ethics such as abortion.
