Hasty Generalizations

Nicole Salamanca's Excellent Reaction Output

Ever since the mass production of contraceptives, the church has been firm on its stand on whether or not contraceptives are good for the people. They firmly reject the use of anything that is in anyway related to the issue. They have biblical proofs to support it. They feel that the use of contraceptives can lead to the demoralization of the human race. They are what you call; people standing firm on their beliefs in what is right and what is wrong.

In defense to them, they do have a point. Contraceptives let people run free with their libido. It is proven that in the U.S., the percentage of promiscuous teens increased ever since they were taught about condoms and birth control pills. We can’t remove the fact that, if people believe that they are safe, then they act rashly and immorally because they know that there will be no consequences or responsibilities that will hinder them from doing what they crave for. An example of this is when a kid rides a bike. Without any protection, the kid is cautious because of course he/she doesn’t want to get hurt. But, if you make him/her wear a helmet and knee pads, he/she’ll be rowdier and less cautious because he/she knows that he won’t get hurt as much. In a way, liberation leads to secularization.

But, in defense to the RH bill, not all cases of contraceptive use are bad. Take the situation of a family who can’t afford to have another baby, or a person who gets raped, or even if the love of your life has a sexually transmitted disease. It’s hard to say no to a need that is probably the only solution to a problematic issue. And, my teacher also said that the church believes that the RH bill will lead to abortion. Isn’t that a bit hasty? First of all, a condom does not mean killing an innocent life. Of course the country won’t want to support such an inhuman act. The bill is just stating that proper family planning is the key to some country issues, not abortion. In fact, the use of contraceptives can help in lessening abortion by not letting anyone who doesn’t want to get pregnant have a baby, but not in an inhuman way.

So, before the church makes any hasty generalizations, they should get the facts straight and stop assuming the worst.
