Sainthood or becoming a saint is a tall order for a lot of us. Human as we are we associate sanctity to the people in Churches and monasteries or seminaries. Sainthood seems only for a chosen few and not for everyone. However, this is incorrect. Becoming a saint is a universal call. Anyone can become a saint with small letter “s” or capital “S”. Anyone of us can one day be venerated in the altar. This is true indeed. We are all invited by Jesus to follow all his ways. We just have to be conscious in view of our roles and duties in life.
To become a saint, one has to live each day perfectly, one moment at a time. For example, if I am a teacher, and the call of this very moment is to teach my students, then I have to pour all my energies, my thoughts, my efforts and my heart and soul to what I am called to do at that very precise moment. In short, I have to render and give my all, to see to it that everything that is expected from me to do is done well and completely.
To become a saint is also not to just think only about yourself and all that you want in this life. You must be considerate with the needs, the feelings, the opinions and everything else in view of your neighbour.
To become a saint is to be the first one to do acts of love or anything which will benefit the other person, even as simple as getting the fare of your fellow passengers in the bus or jeepney, pouring water to the glasses of your family members while eating at table and a million other simple ordinary things.
Lastly, to become a saint is to see Jesus in others, to love Jesus in others and to act like Jesus for the others. Only then can our road to sainthood become smooth in sailing and a possibility.
