Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sunday Gospel Reading (Lk.17:5-10)

As the Apostles ask Jesus to increase their faith, He explains to them through the comparison of faith to a mustard seed that faith, in whatever size one may compare it to, entails such great power upon us and our perspective on different things. The example He gave was that of telling the mustard seed to be uprooted and be planted in the sea, and as this was told, it followed. He also elaborated on how a servant is first given tasks to accomplish before they are welcomed and considered worthy of joining his master. Servants must first seek the fulfilment of what they are called to do before they think of their own satisfaction.

One’s faith is something tangible, something he/she can control with his/her own hands. It is up to that individual to find ways on letting it grow in itself. In seeking for greater faith, we ourselves must be the ones to seek our Lord’s will. We are but His stewards, therefore we must give priority to what we believe is His calling for us. Before we believe of ourselves to become worthy of His kingdom, we have to take part in the Church’s mission and truly make ourselves instruments of God’s love and actualizations of His plans for us.

There are many ways for us to nourish our faith in God. It’s not something we simply ask for. After all, true love is proven through sacrifice – just as how our Lord gave up His only son for us to be saved. This leads to a mission for each of us to find concrete ways in which we become part of making God’s mission a reality. In totality, I believe that He wants His people to become united in His love. Through doing our own tasks and seeking others’ needs before our own, we give life to our faith and provide ourselves with opportunities to become better servants of our Father. When we find ourselves in a place of love and determination despite self-sacrifice, that’s when we also become true followers of Jesus’ footsteps.
