Gospel Reflection: The Rich Man and Lazarus

After listening to the Gospel last Sunday, I realized that this reading can be related to the beatitude, “Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted”. During Lazarus’ stay on earth, it was evident that he did suffer from poverty. But this Gospel teaches us that after life on Earth, there will be greater happiness and comfort, especially for those who suffered during their lives on earth. Lazarus was given a great reward in heaven that was way opposite from what he has on earth. He had nothing on earth, but felt the greatest happiness in Heaven. In the rich man’s case, Jesus does not tell us that it is wrong to become rich. It would only become wrong if the wealth is not shared with those who are in need, especially if the wealth is in excess. Genuine generosity does not require something in return.

As a Lasallian, I think the best way I could do in relation to this Gospel is by applying the concept of “genuine generosity.” I will give my donations to the mission collection and attend outreach programs without asking for anything in return.
