Best Work: Gospel Reflection (Alexandra Tugot)
The Rich Man and Lazarus
Why do we live? We live for God.
I start my reflection with that question because most of us forget the very reason why we were born into the earth. We were born not for ourselves, but to make our way back to The Father. Because our life is not really “ours” but God’s, we must put God’s will before ours. He has given each of us a calling, and it is up to us to find and fulfill said calling.
In the Gospel, the rich man was given chances to fulfill his calling by helping out Lazarus, but instead, he chose to fill his own belly with food and let Lazarus be content with the scraps that fell from the table.
The rich man was later on punished in hell, and Lazarus was satiated in heaven. Why?
The rich man did not bother to help Lazarus when Lazarus needed it the most. He lived his life for himself and filled only his belly. Lazarus, on the other hand, totally depended on the rich man’s scraps. In a way, it is like Lazarus being dependent on God. Lazarus was simple and lived his life in the will of God and though life on earth was harsh on him, he knew that he would be satiated in heaven—and he was.
Basically, the Gospel reminds us of our Christian duties, and as Christians, we must learn to live God’s will before our own, and also we must learn how to see each other as equals, because if we see each other as equal, we will not oppress others.
