Freya Patron’s Best Work: Gospel Reflection
Freya Elessandra G. Patron
Last Sunday’s gospel has left me with many thoughts to ponder on.
For instance, it is the mention of the character “Lazarus” in Jesus’ parable. It is only in this parable that Jesus mentioned a name. I believe He made this so to exemplify the true meaning of “Lazarus”– “God is my help.” The question now would be, am I a Lazarus? Do I believe that God is the ultimate judge, the One who will not have any regard for my material wealth, but for my spiritual health?
Half the people of the world have the finest riches and opportunities. Half the people in this world suffer and desire impunity.
Both halves only have one thing in common – they dwell in the material world, the earth. But these halves have been divided so precisely that closing the gap will be a miracle.
If the whole world will know of God’s Word that He is not after our possessions and our earthly affiliations, but the sincerity of our souls and the succumbing of ourselves to Him, we can be one whole world of Lazaruses, with only God as the source of all help, life and blessings.
We must not misinterpret his Word though – God does not want us to deprive ourselves of all the earthly things. We must find adequate comfort in them, but must not acquire an excess of them. Our faith must be unshakable, unwavering though all of the earthly things be taken away from us.
After all, God is our help. In Him alone are we saved.
