Best Work of Riva Riguera: Rich Man and Lazarus Gospel Reflection

Riva De Mesa Riguera, SrD

GOSPEL REFLECTION#2

This gospel story clearly explains the importance of how we live our lives now. In a world filled with materialistic temptations and influences, we are challenged to get away from these and realize that all we need is God. We are challenged to be unlike the rich man who keeps everything to himself, and be like Lazarus who does not blame the rich man and, instead, only waits. This may be because he knows that all he needs is his faith in God, that God will take care of him.

In the society today, we can see numerous rich people still greedy. Some would do anything, even jueteng, just to have so much money. These are the people that act like the rich man. However, we can still see people who are barely surviving but very happy. These are the people that act like Lazarus. As long as they have their loved ones, they believe that they can live their lives happily. They are willing to fight problems, even with the widespread dengue, in a peaceful and just way. They rely on their faith in God and in doctors so their loved ones may be cured.

I think that the rich man is a very selfish man that never felt sorry for Lazarus. Even when they have died, he still wants others to serve him. Even when he has seen what has happened to him and Lazarus, he still asks from Lazarus. Hopefully, the rich man’s brothers will not follow his footsteps. I hope that they would listen to what the prophets have said, for if they can’t even listen to them, how can they even listen to someone who was dead (like the rich man)?
