Gospel Reflection #1:
We are constantly reminded to be self-less people and to love our neighbors unconditionally just like how God loves us. We’ve memorized the Ten Commandments and repeated the phrase “Love your neighbors as you love yourself.” In context it’s such an easy phrase to understand but applying it in our daily life is the challenging part. In this gospel, the contrast between the happiness on earth and happiness in heaven is defined to show us that God has given our freedom of choice and free will to choose our path in life.
The rich man was so engrossed with his life on earth that he failed to think ahead and think about what happens when he dies. He became wealthy, possessed money, wealth and fame which mattered when he was alive but was deemed unnecessary the moment he died. This was his mistake and we are very vulnerable in committing the same mistake as well. Lazarus on the other hand suffered terribly while he was alive but was rewarded greatly in heaven. One thing God has taught us that pain is never permanent. And all the sufferings we’ve experienced in this world are nothing compared to the eternal happiness that is in store for us the moment we accept God in our lives.
Like what I said, we are very susceptible in committing the same mistake that the rich man made. It is so easy to fall into temptation and choose the pleasures on earth than work hard for the happiness we’ll gain once we die. It is so easy to choose the easy path rather than the path that Jesus wants us to take. Jesus said that nothing is easy, but the reward is great. If we are strong and determined enough to follow Jesus then we are just like Lazarus. Lazarus entrusted everything to God. This is what God calls us to do. And for now, we should heed the warnings and the teachings of the gospels for this are what God wishes us to know. These are His words for His people. This gospel challenges us to keep an open heart and mind to God for we are not alone.
