The rich man in the story went straight to hell when he died because of his sin of omission. He was living such a comfortable life and he had more than what he truly needed to keep himself alive, and he knew that there was a poor man (Lazarus) living outside his home, and yet he did not lift a finger to help the poor man.
We too are sometimes like the rich man- we close our eyes and hearts to the reality of life. For us, only our own lives matter, not anybody else’s. That shouldn’t be the case. On judgment day, God is not going to ask us how many cars we own, how much we earn in our jobs, or how big our house is. Instead, God is going to ask us, if we helped the least of His brothers and sisters.
We should not worry about giving up our worldly possessions especially if we are going to do it in order to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Giving up our worldly possessions for our brothers and sisters would make us richer in God’s eyes. God has given us everything we need in order to live a life patterned after Jesus’ to assure us that we may attain eternal life. We do not need miracles before we repent and believe in the Lord. All we need is to open our hearts to what the Lord wants for us.
