Best Work of Kyla Mañalac: CL Minor Project 1 on Vocation/Career Finding

Kyla Mañalac, Sr-B

What really is important in today’s society? In my opinion, money, power or status may be on what’s on most people’s minds. I refuse to conform to the idea that anything you do to get these things is okay. What really is important to me is doing the right thing. It may sound cheesy, but I have been, and am being brought up in a Catholic community, religious parents and all. I may not be able to follow it all the time, but it is essential for me to always do the right thing. I learned this from my father, who is my role model. He has taught me that not everything we want we will get, and that not everything that happens to us will make us happy but it will teach us lessons sooner or later. He also taught me that God planned everything, and that God will not give us anything we can’t handle; we just have to find the inner strength through prayer to do it. He took psychology up as his college course, and I admire what he is doing now, which is helping run MyPhone as their vice president, and on the sidelines doing talks, seminars, and leadership trainings.

In our society, especially in high school, doing the right thing will rarely be “cool”. Usually, refusing to help someone cheat during a test, or denying someone the opportunity of doing something wrong will get you ostracized and made fun of. People make such big deals of these instances that those memories will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

When I grow up, I want to be able to talk people through bad instances and help them get over it. I want to be able to reach out and help ostracized, or even just struggling people live their lives in ways that God would deem fit. I believe I have the gift of talking to people, and therefore I plan to use it, may it be as a political leader, psychologist, someone who does talks and seminars, or even a guidance counselor. I will measure success not by how much I earn, but by how many lives I have been able to touch. I may not have gone through a great deal of experiences, but with the proper education and the skill I have and I will get from talking to people, I am confident that I will excel in whichever profession I choose.
