2010: Back to the Dark Ages

Excellent Reaction output by: Camille Diomampo Sr.D CN: 6

According to the 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines, article II, section 6: the separation of the Church and the State shall be inviolable. Being devout Catholic country, we ask, does the church really have a say on our state’s policies?

Earlier today in Social Studies class, I reported on the threats of excommunication against President Benigno Aquino III if he continues to push through with passing the Reproductive Health Bill. Then, I strongly supported President Aquino’s stand. Now, upon reading Atty. Cristina A. Montes’ letter, I am proud to say that my stand has not changed.

The Catholic Church does not have the power to have somebody imprisoned, as in the case of Carlos Celdran. If we were to justify this, then every religion might as well imprison anyone who offends their belief. On the other hand, the threats of the excommunication of Pres. Aquino seem to bring us back to the days wherein the Church used excommunication as a defense mechanism to enable it to exercise power. I believe that the church should not intervene with state policies. It should not falsify the content of the bill either. I personally have read the contents of the Reproductive Health bill, and it is not at all “evil” as the church deems it to be.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a Catholic. However, I believe that this bill can actually solve our problems, which is why I invite everyone to read and understand the Reproductive Health Bill. If everybody opens their minds, then maybe we can find a compromise to this conflict of ideas.
