Best Work: Sunday Gospel Reflection (Aldrin Acantilado)
1. What do you think of this Gospel Story in relation to our social situation today? Cite concrete situations in our present world which directly speak about this Sunday Gospel.
The gospel challenges us to try to put ourselves into the lives of other people especially the poor and to reflect if we are doing our mission here on earth because if we were to suffer the same way they did, there is a big chance that we will also ask for mercy so as early as now we should offer sacrifices for them and trust God that he will return what we gave to his people. This serves as an eye-opener for all of us so that we will be able to act in service to the needy.
2. That was a great story, wasn’t it? Why? Expound your answer. What factors made this Gospel story great?
Yes, because just like any other story that came from the bible, this story leaves a mark to all the readers who read it using their hearts. The story made me realize that there are things in life that are more important than having lots of money and material things. Nothing compares to the inevitable smile on the faces of the people, no sound is sweeter to the ear than the sound coming from their mouths while saying thank you. The story proved that serving other people is a key that will bring us to eternal happiness with God.
3. Why do you think the rich man wanted Lazarus to serve him even after they were dead?
Rich man wanted Lazarus to serve him even after they were dead because he believes that even in the afterlife; he is still the same rich man who commands people to serve him.
4. Do you think the rich man ever was sorry for the way he treated Lazarus? Why? Why not? Explain.
No, the rich man was not sorry for the way he treated Lazarus because if he was sincerely sorry, he wouldn’t treat Lazarus as someone inferior compared to him. When it comes to asking forgiveness, one doesn’t just say he or she is sorry because it could mean a lot of things. A man showing sincere act of reconciliation is heavier to a man speaking words of forgiveness.
5. Do you think the rich man’s brothers followed what Moses and the prophets’ writings said to do? Why? Why not?
No, because the rich man wouldn’t ask Abraham to send Lazarus to the rich man’s brothers if they already followed what the prophets’ writings.
6. What then could be the concrete challenges of this Sunday Gospel in your life this week as a Lasallian in particular and a follower of Jesus in general?
The Sunday gospel challenges me to think on what I can do for the poor people. God gave me everything that I need to live, to love and to serve, so it is about time for me to do my part as a human. To show the people that behind all the choking darkness, there is still a glimmering light. I will show them what my teachers taught me throughout my school life, a Lasallian that is ready to serve and to live his life for other people.
7. If you were in the shoes first of Lazarus and second of the rich man, what will you do? Discuss. What then is the moral of this Sunday Gospel?
If I were in the shoes of Lazarus, I will not just wait outside the gate of the rich man for any food; I will do what I can to survive because in life help and mercy are not always present. God gave us everything we need on earth, we just have to put it to good use, he didn’t create us to just wait for mercy and die; he created us to make good use of our abilities and our natural resources. If I were in the shoes of the rich man, I will help Lazarus for a few days until he is strong to stand up using his own feet and I will tell him to try to fight all the animosities of life because I won’t always be there to help him whenever there is a difficult problem he is facing, it is important to know that there are times in life where there won’t be any people we can rely on but ourselves. The moral of this Sunday gospel is to serve as an eye-opener for us to not just live for ourselves but for other people.
